Seattle Times Mar 18, News Amid rising costs and declining enrollment, four of five South Sound-area scout camps have closed and some are being logged to raise money. Kids have more options today, Voelker said, families are busier, and many are choosing organized team sports over scouting. Camp Hahobas offered more than acres with three lakes, swaths of forest, a saltwater beach and spectacular views of the Hood Canal and Olympic Mountains.

Campers competed in lake regattas on homemade rafts and could earn a merit badge for welding and learn about blacksmithing. But a final campfire was held last month, after the executive board voted to prepare the camp for sale, one of many possible options for the camp.

More logging may get under way this year. The long-term future of all four of the closed camps is up in the air. All options are on the table, Voelker said, from outright sale if deeds allow it, such as at Hahobas, to just shuttering the camps and hoping for better times, or devising a new management structure.

Parents and scout volunteers are working to create a nonprofit organization to assume the costs and upkeep of the waterside Camp Kilworth, which was donated to the Boy Scouts of America in The Friends of Camp Kilworth have created a Facebook page and an online petition with about signatures supporting continued scout use of the camp. Envisioned is a partnership with the Pacific Harbors Council and Boy Scouts of America to take over the operating expenses, maintenance, marketing and improvements of the camp and provide Federal Way and Tacoma area scouts a local option for day camps and weekend outings.

Parents who use Camp Kilworth say Camp Thunderbird outside of Olympia is too far away for families to drive Cub Scouts for day camp with a morning drop-off and evening pickup in I-5 traffic. Voelker said the council is aware of the issue, and is trying to arrange other options for parents for this upcoming season for day camp.

With its spectacular view of Puget Sound, mature forest padded with moss and ferns, and fine old lodge buildings, Camp Kilworth is just too good to lose, parents said. Juanita DuPont, of Federal Way, said she would like to see a better justification for such drastic action. The scouts have tried to sell Camp Kilworth before, only to be turned back by a fight that went all the way to the State Supreme Court, which found that the deed for the camp directed that the property revert to the original family trusts if the council violated the original intent of the gift that the land be used only for scouting.

The Boy Scouts are free to enter into any arrangement that keeps scouting going on the property, Casey said. From pinewood derbies to flag ceremonies, Medieval sword-fight re-enactments and an uncountable number of camp fires, Camp Kilworth has been the center of family activities for which there is no local substitute especially for young Cub Scouts, said Laura Olsen, whose boys grew up enjoying the camp.

It feels a world away from the bustle of Federal Way, Olsen said. We have to keep an open mind. Some may sell, others may sit and wait, and with others we may get a new partner. This lesson completely escaped another formerly religious organization and it too paid the price last year. The year-old Boy Scouts of America might file for bankruptcy in a fiscal sense years after the leadership succumbed to moral and intellectual bankruptcy.

At the root of the problem is that three-letter-word that has undermined many individuals and organizations in this modern age: sex. Charges of sexual abuse of boys were allegedly covered up by BSA leadership for decades. The cover-up just made the crisis that much worse when the public was finally made aware of the problem. Membership rolls began collapsing as churches discontinued their Scouting programs in favor of Trail Life, which is not ashamed of being a Christian organization. The announcement, made public last week on the Boy Scouts official blog, Scouting Wirecomes in response to rising operating costs mainly associated with the group's liability insurance as it faces hundreds of lawsuits alleging past sex abuse of youths by scout leaders.

The group said that it up to now it has tried to keep the annual membership fee as low as possible by subsidizing core costs, including liability insurance. It did not make a direct reference to the sex abuse lawsuits. The Boy Scouts of America currently has 2.

The Scouts did not rule out more fee increases in the future, citing the escalating operational costs and service increases. Reaction from adult volunteer leaders in a blog operated by the BSA's Scouting magazine ranged from annoyance to skepticism.

Something else has to be going on. Some questioned the amount of the fee increase, while others noted that the announcement came after new families in their areas already had been recruited under the old cost structure. Another leader agreed that the timing was bad, but said the national organization must remain fiscally sound.

That will create "a giant sucking sound in enrollment coming for next year," said one leader. Accessibility links Skip to main content Keyboard shortcuts for audio player. NPR Shop.

The year-old organization announced Wednesday that younger girls will be allowed to join Cub Scouts and that older girls will be eligible to earn the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. The group said it considered input from current members and leaders before making the decision. Boy Scouts to allow girls to join BSA said the expansion is also aimed at helping busy families consolidate programs for their children. Most are dual-earners and there are more single-parent households than ever before, making convenient programs that serve the whole family more appealing," the BSA statement said.

The news also received mixed reactions on social media, with some critics calling the move unnecessary and "PC.Thirty years ago this summer, I spent two weeks backpacking across Philmont, a ,acre expanse of northeastern New Mexico owned by the Boy Scouts of America.

Most people who trek Philmont say it changed their life; it certainly changed mine. A few years later, I became an Eagle Scout — still one of my proudest achievements. On Tuesday, the Boy Scouts of America filed for bankruptcyseeking, in part, protection from mounting costs involving several hundred sexual abuse lawsuits.

The filing is a defensive move, and the organization may yet survive. My personal experiences, and the ideas of scouting — blending self-reliance with community, practical skills with a republican civic philosophy — made me who I am.

Scouting is a valuable, even vital idea; the Boy Scouts, though, is quite toxic. For scouting to survive, the Boy Scouts of America may have to go. The Boy Scouts of America was founded inand almost from the beginning it has had a sexual abuse problem. But ina court in Portland, Ore. During that trial about 1, red-flag files were introduced as evidence, though only the jury and lawyers were allowed to see them.

The Boy Scouts at the time denied allegations of negligence but init was forced to make public thousands of pages of documents from those files. In an echo of the scandals in the Roman Catholic Church, the files show that the national organization often allowed scout leaders accused of abuse, including Mr. Dykes, to continue working with boys. The Portland case unleashed hell on the Boy Scouts. Along with a cascade of lawsuits over individual abuse claims, several former scouts are suing the organization for access to all the perversion files, which they say contain the names of 7, men who abused boys under their charge, along with 12, victims.

Last year, to raise money, the Boy Scouts mortgaged Philmont, the crown jewel of the scouting kingdom. My troop, in Nashville, was sponsored by a local congregation of the Disciples of Christ, a liberal, mainline denomination with just a bit more Jesus than the Unitarian Universalists. Our adult leaders were good men — funny, kind, wise, gruff — and the boys came from all around: white, black, brown, well off, working class.

We hiked, we goofed off, we got away from our parents and we became like brothers. The Boy Scouts have done the same, in reverse.

That may be true. Too many bad apples raise unavoidable questions about the orchard they came from. Even if the Boy Scouts manages to get through this crisis financially, what possible reform could win back the public trust? Is it possible to have scouting without the Boy Scouts? In he founded the Boy Scouts; two years later he and his sister created the Girl Guides. The movement spread quickly, with national organizations sprouting from North America, where the Boy Scouts of America opened into Southeast Asia — today, Indonesia has by far the largest, with some 17 million members.

Each national organization had to follow some basic parameters set by Baden-Powell, but otherwise was free to set its own rules. The same year it was founded, a rival organization, the American Boy Scouts, began under the leadership of William Randolph Hearst it folded in the s. More recently, the Baden-Powell Service Association has emerged as a coed, nonreligious alternative to the Boy Scouts. The Girl Scouts has 1. Scouting is inclusive, in a way that belies the stereotypes and makes it an antidote to the racial and economic siloing so common today.

Scouts wear uniforms not to play soldier, but to step outside their social roles — to become equals. At its core, scouting offers a dual education in civics and self-reliance. Scouting is where I learned the importance of voting, conservation and civil rights. I also learned to pitch a tent, tie knots, purify water, climb a cliff and perform CPR.

I was a scout when I was a kid and my father was a scout leader. My son was a scout and I was a scout leader.

You are absolutely correct. There should be no surprise here for anyone. The BSA was forced by the gay mafia to abandon their moral standards and therefor has no attraction for parents who have kept theirs.

The immoral folks who supported this change are unlikely to have children, so the result is the end of the BSA through lack of members. The queers wanted into the Scouts, but it turns out there are not enough gurley-boys to keep the membership up. Too — damned — bad. In fact when the article last year, saying how the BSA was going to start allowing openly gay men to serve, we predicted this downfall.

And many on the left laughed down our critiques. The no sex scouts…. I have no sympathy for them what so ever…. I put my Eagle badge and Order of the Arrow sash in a rummage sale after this cave in.
